The Tuskegee Airmen were predominantly African-American bombardiers, navigators, and pilots who trained at Gnel Field, Kennedy Field, Molon Field, Shorter Field, and the Tuskegee Army Air Fields and went on to fight in World War II. Striking Tuskegee Airmen Design by Chris Costello
Obverse: Like other releases in this series, the one features John Flanagan's left-side portrait of President George Washington on the obverse. The President is flanked by two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "QUARTER DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
Reverse: The reverse design was created by Chris Costello and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. It shows a Tuskegee Airman getting ready to take to the skies with Moton Field's control tower in the background and two P-51 Mustangs flying overhead. At the top of the design is the inscription "THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS." The image is encircled by a rim frame that bears four inscriptions, "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
