information
APM/ Lunt - Herschel wedge / sun prism 1 1/4 '' in a set
Herschel wedge / sun prism 1 1/4 "
for professional solar photography and observation
ND3 / Top Pole Set
Herschel wedges or solar prisms are intended for observing the sun with refractors. About 95% of the sunlight is blocked out, the rest is available to the observer. The sunlight can then be reduced to the desired level with variable polarization filters or strong gray filters.
The difference to lens solar filters is that the filtering is done shortly before the eyepiece or the camera. As a rule, the contrast and sharpness of the solar image are higher with a Herschel wedge than with a lens solar filter.
The advantages of the Lunt Herschel wedge:
• particularly high-quality surfaces for very good contrast
• Completely closed housing with integrated light trap
• No stray light escaping, therefore particularly safe
Can only be used with refractors:
Since the full solar energy enters the telescope and the filtering only takes place shortly before the focal plane, we only recommend refractors for working with Herschel wedges. The refractor must also not have a rear corrector lens. Optical elements would be heated so much by the concentrated solar energy that damage cannot be ruled out. For this reason, no filter may be attached in front of the Herschel wedge, but only on the eyepiece side.
The advantage of Herschel wedges on refractors:
In addition to the better image quality, as with a typical glass solar filter, more light is also available. This enables the use of special contrast filters such as the Baader Solar Continuum. Such filters can greatly increase the contrast of the sun.
Adjusting the image brightness:
Of course, 5% transmission is too much for observing the sun. You absolutely need light attenuation filters. An ND3 filter is screwed into the eyepiece barrel at the bottom. Since the Herschel wedge produces polarized light, a simple polarization filter that is screwed into the eyepiece or the photo adapter is sufficient for further light reduction. Turning it will reduce the brightness. With gray filters and the Baader Solar Continuum Filter, you can further reduce the brightness to the desired level and influence the contrast.
Warning !!!

APM/ Lunt - Herschelwedge / Solar prism 1 1/4 '' set
Herschelwedge / Solarprism with 1 1/4 "barrel for professional Solar-Photographie and Solar-Observation complete with ND3 and Top Pol Filter.
Herschelwedges (solar prism) are made for the solar observation with refractors. Around 95% of the solar light will be blocked. With a variable polarizing filter and strong gray filters the sunlight will be reduced to the necessary amount. Unlike objective solar filters, the filtering happens close to the eyepiece or camera. Normaly the contrast and sharpness of the solar image with an Herschelwedge is much higher.
The advantages of the Lunt Herschelwedge:
Perfect surfaces for a very high contrast
Completely closed housing with integrated heat trap
No scattered light escaping, for maximum safety
Delivered in sturdy aluminum case with foam insert
Only for using with refractors:
The full solar energy enters the telescope and the filtering happens close to the focal plane, so we only recommend refractors for working with the Herschelwedge. Otherwise the refractor shouldn't have a rear corrector lens. The optical elements would be heated through the concentrated solar energy and could be damaged. Also filters are only allowed at the eyepiece side of the Herschelwedge and not at the front.
The advantages of Herschelwedges at refractors:
In addition to the better image quality, the Herschelwedge offers more light. So you can use a special contrast filter, like the Baader Solar Continuum. With filters like this you can increase the contrast at the sun.
Regulation of image brightness:
Of course 5% are too much for the solar observing. So you need an additional filter for light reduction. You can screw an ND3 filter directly in the eyepiece. Because the Herschelwedge produces polarized light, you only need a simple polarizing filter to screw into the eyepiece or photo adapter for additional light reduction. Now you can rotate the eyepiece and so reduce the light. With additional gray filters and the Baader Solar Continuum Filter you can reduce the brightness to the required amount and so affect the contrast.
Warning !!!
