"The Kite that Smashed Berlin". The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engined Second World War heavy bomber. Affectionately known as the "Lanc" it became the most famous and most successful of the Second World War night bombers. Although primarily a night bomber, it also excelled at precision bombing, and gained worldwide renown as the "Dam Buster" during the 1943 raids on Germany's Ruhr Valley dams.
