Original Old (1950?) Whoopee John Polka Band 13”x18” Poster.
Cardboard. Unused. Red and black. In the era of records, not tapes. In the era prior to area codes and phone numbers that were smaller and used letters. I danced to his band in 1957. He was big on tubas, and the King of old time music, the accordion. TV hadn't been much during these earlier years. There are three available being sold separately. This is not a copy or reproduction! I suggest that it came from the Midway Ballroom at Independence, WI. Prior to the 1960's, you would see posters like this on walls, sign posts, light poles and telephone poles in community areas near where he would be playing. The sponsor would crayon where and when John would be playing. He played all over in Northern Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin such as at Fourners in EauClaire, WI, Rainbow Gardens in Cadott, WI, Withrow in Hugo, MN, Avalon, Concordia in LaCrosse, WI, Acorn in Centerville, WI, in Arkansas, in Pines at Bloomer, WI, the Silver Dome, Neilsville, WI, the Silver Moon in Alma, WI, Moonlite in Cataract, WI, the Plamore in Rochester, MN, and many other dance halls long gone. Concordia is one of the very few in use today. Few new dance halls have come about over the years. The Palladium in Osseo, WI still sponsors an old-time dance. The Hill Top is now an Antique Shop. The Mill Road in Galesville, WI flooded in summer of 2017 and is no longer offering dances. Occasionally there is a barn dance in a VFW hall or curling rink. 90% of the 300 or so polka dancers in Western Wisconsin are over 60, and a few near 100. They congregate wherever a band plays these days. Prior to the flood in 2017, this group was a regular on Saturdays (usually 75 – 100 people) in Galesville, WI almost like weekly club meetings. People came from up to 150 miles away. These signs of the times make this poster a symbol of pleasant memories of the past. I have stored this since the 1970's or early 1980's. I have been a collector/accumulator of past pleasantries since 1942. Many old time bands are no longer around, and few have popped up in recent years. In the 1940's and the 1950's Polka music was heard in many taverns. In Ettrick, WI there was a dance hall above the old Ford Garage and above the Woolen Mills. These two buildings are gone.
