Description
Very large format vintage poster, (approximately 34 by 47 3/4 inches) by Steffens & Gaines Aerographics of a painting by artist Alfred Owles showing a couple of British BE2Cs disrupting what would otherwise be a fine flying and picnic day for the WWI Zeppelin L25. Owles takes some liberties with L25, though the effect of tiny Brits menacing the wily Hun is still dramatic, particularly when you take in the dimensions of this print. So what happened? Early on, the Zeppelins were notorious for dropping ballast and out-climbing the pursuing fighters to make good their escape. On the other hand, if the Brits managed to sneak up on the Zepp unawares, they might have got off a few incendiary rounds into their vast target spelling the end of the road for the Zepp and its crew. I know what happened, but I ain't sayin', which provides a great rationale for Zepp enthusiasts to browse thier libraries to look it up. (You may thank me later.) Sharp details and vivid colors at this large scale are an experience to be appreciated. Poster evidences some minor wear along the edges and the corners evidence how it has been tacked to a surface during its lifetime, none of which detracts from the overall experience and will clean up nicely if your frame shop knows its business. These posters hold up well and you may wish to have them mounted without frame. So long as you keep it out of direct sunlight, the colors will remain sharp for another 40-plus years as they have here. Overall good condition. Shipping is combined if you like more than one in this series. Will be mailed in tube. Thank you for looking at this and my other auctions.
